Social Media and Divorce

Great report by CNN’s Alison Kosik on Social Networking sites increasingly being named as a factor in deteriorating marriages. Surprising to note that 1 in 5 divorce papers reference Facebook.

We are going to see more cases of break-up of relationship due to improper communication on Social Media channels,  not only among family members but in work setting as well (employee-employer relationship for example).

This will result in calls for more privacy on Social Networking sites. Facebook and Twitter will have to respond to their users’ need for privacy by enabling suitable privacy filters.

  24. So there are 850,000 divorces per year in the US, but the number is declining, partly because of the recession which makes divorce unaffordable. I never thought of the GOP’s success at wrecking the economy as part of their defense of marriage strategy.

  25. I’m curious as to where these statistics come from. I’m a divorce attorney. Although I’m sure Facebook, etc. has played a role in some of my cases, I’ve NEVER seen it or any other social networking site referenced in a court filing.
